The long, hard winters and short growing season required crops suited to the weather, Squanto a native chief taught them how to go corn and other crops suited to the climate. The close proximity of the sea lead to fishing and the great harbor of Boston provided for sea trade and ship building. Abundant forests gave rise to a thriving timber and lumber industry and also provided necessary raw materials for ship building.
