Put yourself in 2 situations:
First Situation = You are a President of College or University
Second Situation =You are a Human Resources Practitioner – specializing in Labour Relations
Process
The goal of this simulation assignment is to offer the opportunity to practice articulating how the HR Practitioner, with a specialty in Labour Relations, can be of benefit to a resistant organizational leader, who happens to be the President of the college/university.
In both situations you must prepare ‘Writeup’ in what you want to say in order to convince the other side of their perspective.
Setting
The college/university has three unions already, each representing faculty, support staff and maintenance workers. While relations between the college/university and each union are generally positive, each of the unions likes to ‘bend the ear’ of the President. They have started going directly to the President to discuss issues and are starting to compete with each other to have more time with the President on numerous topics.
Role Descriptions
ROLE: President of College or University
You are meeting with the Human Resources Practitioner in order to discuss the possibility of having the HRP more involved in day to day labour relations issues. You do not understand why there is a need to have this increased role from an HR Practitioner as you have been able to manage labour relations issues successfully for a long time.At the same time, you do find yourself having to deal with issues that you don’t necessarily have time for and are looking to ensure that labour relations matters get dealt with effectively.
1. Find out from the HRP what they can do to make relations between the College/University easier.
a. What will they bring to the role that will enhance relations between the union and the college/university?
b. what concerns do you have if the HRP is unable to manage the relationship with each union effectively?
c. what benefit will the HRP’s role bring to you and your leadership of the college/university?
