My take on it.
Experimental Research would be a better-suited method for the question in mind, "Why are they doing that?" Because Experimental research takes place in a controlled environment, while descriptive is moreso predicting and loosely observed research and begs the question of, "What are they thinking?" or "What are they doing?"
