Q1. Moment resistance of a simply supported beam at elevated temperature Consider a simply supported hot-rolled I section UB 457×152×52 kg/mS355 supporting a reinforced concrete slab with the following design loads: D.L. =3.0kPa S.D.L. =1.2kPa L.L. =3.0kPa i) Evaluate the factored load and the design moment at the fire limit state. ii) Evaluate the moment resistances of the steel beam at various periods of fire exposure: 15,30 , 45 and 60 mins based on the corresponding strength reduction factors at elevated temperatures given in BS 5950 Part 8: 2003. iii) In order to increase the fire resistance period of the steel beam to 30mins, it is proposed to adopt UB 610×229×113 kg/mS355. Verify the structural adequacy of the proposed steel beam, and comment on its feasibility.
