The geological composition of the earth has changed considerably since the beginning of its formation. Even today, rocks are subjected to disfigurement and metamorphism due to the heat radiating from within the Earth's core or changes in the position of the tectonic plates on the Earth's surface. Rocks get more or less recrystallized as a result of external factors such as climatic changes. This sort of a transformation is usually a slow process that occurs gradually over thousands of years. Marble is a variety of metamorphic rock that forms as a result of high temperatures and extreme air pressure. Marble is formed when a compound in the rock known as calcite, which also helps to form limestone, recrystallizes to a denser rock that consists of roughly equigranular calcite crystals.
