uses recombinant DNA technology to alter an organisms' DNA
Genetic engineering uses recombinant DNA technology to alter an organism's DNA.
The field of genetic engineering relies on altering the genetic make up of organisms in order to engineer and introduce qualities that are beneficial to humans. An example of genetic engineering is the use of bacteria to produce insulin. The gene for insulin production is introduced into the bacterial cells, the cells then divide and are given the conditions necessary to produce insulin. This way, insulin production has become cheaper and easier than it was in the past, where insulin had to be extracted from animal blood.
