John and Bernard share a feeling of estrangement from their individual societies. John discloses to Bernard that he once sneaked off to have the holy creature dreams that the Indian young men must have, despite the fact that the tribe had not released him with alternate young men. John obviously encounters everything sincerely despite the fact that neither one of the societies views profound feelings as "ordinary" conduct.

On the story, a brave new world John and Bernard share a feeling of estrangement from their individual societies. They also feel alone, different and they feel that they didn’t belong to that world. They also feel rejected by the world they live in.
