Louis and Mary leakey are regarded as the first family of paleontology. Their lives and that of their children revolved around Olduvai Gorge. Louis was born in Kenya to English parents, who are missionaries.
Louis and Mary met in England and worked at the Olduvai Gorge but they didn’t spent much time at the Olduvai Gorge before they got married in 1937.
Louis leakey discovered pre-historic stones tools while he was outside watching birds. He joined a fossil-finding excursion in Tanzania after he graduated from the university. This expedition triggered his interest in human origins.
Apart from the Pre-historic stones tools discovered by the leakys, they also found several extinct vertebrates which include 25 million year old Pronconsul primate. It was among the first and few fossil apes that were discovered.
The leakys put their works on hold due to political unrest in nearby Kenya and returned back to Olduvai Gorge in late 1950s. Although, the leakys previous work at the Olduvai Gorge was focused on tools but when they went back, they put their effort to look for evidence of human life.
