The material that will be able to pass the cell, would be characterized as being soluble. As in order for them to pass, they would be able to dissolve in one of the layers of the membrane, I believe.
The best option that describes the movement of certain chemicals through the plasma membrane is because they are soluble.
A cell membrane is a thin membraneous layer surrounding the cell. They perform several roles and functions such as:
- regulating the inflow and outflow of materials in the cell
- protecting the cell from external barriers
Cell membranes are semi-permeable which helps in the filtration of certain chemicals. This helps to ensure that some chemicals can pass through the lipid bilayer while others cannot. Those chemicals that are said to be able to pass through the lipid bilayer are known to be soluble.
