There were many similarities between the kingdoms of Ghana and Mali. Some of them are: both were created in the same region, West Africa; both relied heavily on trade; both produced an abundant amount of gold; and many more.

The empire of Ghana is also known as Wagadou or Awkar. It was a West African empire that was based in the modern-day southeast of Mauritania and western Mali that existed from c. 300 until c. 1100.

As a result of neighboring the Mali Empire, there were many similarities between both empires.
