It allows the reader to see how the character came to be who he or she is currently, it creates realism in the text, it creates tension between the narrator and the character, etc.
Having the narrator begin the story with events from their childhood helps build a basis for the story as well as build up the plot from the start, which interests readers. Hope I helped!
