Further explanation
Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) was a French philosopher and politician. After studying law, he was sent by the king to the United States to study American prisons. He stayed there for almost one year and traveled all over the country. What interested him most was not prisons but democracy, which he discovered for the first time because it did not exist in France. At the time, France was a monarchy.
When he goes back to France, he wrote a famous book about the American political system called Democracy in America. In this book, he said that democracy is dangerous for the power of individuals. He explained that in this system, the state is responsible for everything, and people must obey what is forced on them. Democracy creates a powerful state which takes care of the citizens, but it makes them weak. The only way to have power in a democracy is to participate in a political party or association to be heard by others.
