The story set during the American Civil War. The reader knows from the excerpt that this soldier is a  Federal Scout who disguised himself. However, Farquhar doesn't know this fact. He is lured by this soldier into a trap which the soldier asks from him a favor about the burning the bridge. The correct answer is the first option.
