He was chosen because he helped tie the south and north together, and he also had former military experience. George Washington later became president because the people trusted him from leading the Continental Army. He was a humble, yet strong leader.

He was from colony of Virginia and  was elected over other candidates because of his previous military experience. they hoped that he could unite the colonies.
