Tariffs are taxes on imported goods. This benefited the North, as tariffs increased the price of foreign goods. This increase in the price of foreign goods made it more likely that Americans would buy goods made in the US, as they would be cheaper. The goal of a tariff was to protect American industries. Since the North was becoming industrialized at this time, it benefitted them the most.

However, tariffs hurt Southerners. Since the South relied heavily on trade for everyday goods, it increased the price of products they bought on a consistent basis. It also hurt the South because it reduced the amount of foreign countries who wanted to trade with the US.
