CORTISOL is the hormone released by the adrenal glands to allow the body to make energy more readily available from stored units. This hormone is produced within the adrenal glands. It is released by the body in response to stress and low blood-sugar concentrations. As this hormone is released, it increases blood sugar, suppresses the immune system, and helps the body metabolize fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.

Other hormones released by the adrenal glands include aldosterone, epinephrine, adrenocorticotropic, and dehydroepiandosterone that all work to help the body regulate itself in response to internal and external stimuli.
