Even though the other writers mentioned were also important figures regarding African-American literature and the fight for freedom and/or respect, Hurston was one of the central figures of the Harlem Renaissance. Her most popular novel was Their Eyes Were Watching God, published in 1937. Hurston wrote about the struggles of being an African-American. She passed away in 1969.
