Natural resources are responsible for maintaining the economy and jobs. In the United States, these resources are internally consumed, exported and proceeds obtained are used in boosting internal economy and job maintenance.

Coal: This commodity accounts for about 27% of world production. Though a nonrenewable and considered one of the substances responsible for present global warming, coal is heavily sustains the electricity and power generation, steel production and cement manufacturing industry. Wyoming is the largest coal producing state is followed by West Virginia and Kentucky among others.

Natural gas:  A greater percentage or almost all the national reserve of this commodity is  utilized in the United States and more is imported to sustain domestic demand. Notable states with considerable reserve are Texas, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Louisiana. This abundant, clean fossil fuel and relatively cheap source of energy is used in generation of  electricity, heat buildings, fuel vehicles, heat water, bake foods, power industrial furnaces, and even run air conditioners appliances.

Petroleum (crude oil): This commodity discovered in the Oil Creek region of Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1859 . A major world energy fuel. Proceeds from the petroleum industry is responsible for exploration processes, production, processes/refining, marketing of natural gas and petroleum by products. These also include: gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel, heating oil, and heavier fuel oils.
