Hemingway applies this style, knowing as the exemplification of a code hero. His heroes are competent, professional, courageous and dignified. We can observe that the characters in the excerpt are waiting for the attack. There is some kind of danger expecting them or in other words they are getting ready for it. Additionally, it is characteristic for the code hero to be a heavy drinker or smoker. The characters are smoking while waiting for the attack.

Answer: The fact that there are anxious about doing something that they think is the right thing and they are brave enough to do it at last.

Explanation: What makes heroes, as far as I know, is the determination and bravery they show in crucial moments, no matter how nervous or anxious they are, they end up accomplishing their mission.
