Originally Netscape Communications created HTTPS for its Netscape Navigator web browser in 1994. HTTPS was used with the SSL protocol but as SSL evolved into Transport Layer Security or "TLS"HTTPS was formally specified by RFC 2818 in May 2000 letting it be used across many different browsers allowing it to become as popular and wide-spread as it is today.

aka, HTTPS is currently the most commonly used security protocol today.
