They were the two key issues of the election.

The correct answer is the following.

With no doubt, the war in Iraq and the collapse of the economy in 2008, played an important role in the US Presidential election of 2008.

After many years in Iraq, journalist and American citizens still questioned the reasons for the US invasion on Iraq. It was supposed that Iraq had mass destruction weapons. That is why the US troops invaded the Middle East country. By after so many years, they couldn't find any weapon of mass destruction. So people were upset with the money spent on war.

The economy was the other big issue. The economy collapsed in 2008 after the Freddie Mac crises and the number of people that were in trouble for losing his homes. Many big financial institutions collapsed, such as Merry Lynch and PJ Morgan. These events, of course, upset American people and they found in Barack Obama an option for change.
