Jan just brought home a cat from the animal shelter. The cat goes through the house looking around and sniffing. Jan says the cat is going through the process of mapping. Her daughter Audie says the cat is going through spatial learning. Who is correct?

Respuesta :

Jan because the cat is new to the house so the cat has to know the 'map' of the house

The correct answer is - Audie is correct.

When an animal, in this case a cat, is introduced to a new environment, it is not aware of it, what is in it, what can be useful, what should be avoided etc. The cat thus starts to look around and sniff the new environment, thus collecting information about it. Once it collects the information for each spot that the cat dedicates some attention too, it memorizes it, thus engaging in the process of spatial learning. Once the cats learns all of the space it knows everything useful about it, which is also why when something is moved away, or a new object is introduced, the cat ill feel disturbed and uncomfortable at first, as it is something that it has not learned and confuses its perception of the space.

The spatial learning, basically, is a process that the animals use to encode the information about their environment sop that they can easily navigate through the space and recall the location of motivationally relevant stimuli.
