Mr. Brocklehurst is the master of the Lowood School, the institution where both Helen and Jane live. He is a strict man, who teaches a doctrine of moderation and privation. However, he is a hypocrite, as he takes money away from the school in order to have a luxurious life. Helen serves as his foil, because she also preaches moderation. However, Helen's religious sincerity means that she actually practices what she preaches.
