In 1970, the USSR and the United States shared the same vision. They wanted to reduce their strategic weapons, such as missiles and the nuclear bomb, to avoid another great war that would be terrible for the whole planet. These agreements were made in two stages, the first in 1972 (SALT I), and the second in 1979 (SALT II). In SALT II, it was Jimmy Carter, the new president of the United States, who pursued the policy of the previous president and signed with Brezhnev the prohibition of nuclear weapons in space and the continuation of the SALT I agreements. These two treaties allowed the relations between the Eastern block and the Western block to be better and lead towards the complete end of the cold war that would happen about ten years later.
