His nonviolent actions were inspirational in other nonaggressive movements around the world.
Gandhi (1869 – 1948) was an Indian activist who leaded the Indian Independence Movement against the British rulers. He encouraged the use of techniques which included non-violent civil disobedience, as a manner to protest and to spoil their oppresors. He also promoted tolerance and coexistence of different religous (mainly Islam and Hinduism) in the desired independent territory.
India managed to become independent, although the tolerant coexistence was not achieved and Muslims and Hinduists ended up creating two separate states (Pakistan and India respectively). Anyway, Gandhi became an inspiration for civil rights and freedom defenders all over the world.
