The Nullification crisis centered around southern protests against the series of protective tariffs (Or taxes) that were introduced to tax any foreign goods to boost the sales of US products and keep the manufactures protected from cheap British goods.

The south was mainly agricultural because of the warm weather and fertile land and was reliant on foreign countries and the north for manufactured goods. The south saw the tariffs as very damaging to their economy.

While John Quincy Adams was in office his vice president, John C. Calhoun drafted the South Carolina Exposition. This document declared that the tariffs were unconstitutional and caused the Nullification Crisis to bring interests of the North and South into conflict for the very first time
