Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was famous for his devotion to nonviolent protest to achieve equality. Why did Dr. King think nonviolent resistance would work? What examples of peaceful protest can you see during the Civil Rights movement?

Through his 6 Principles of Non-Violence, he believed that non-violence would seek to win friendship and understanding. He believed the purpose of nonviolence was to create a "Beloved Community".

An example of a peaceful protest was the Birmingham Campaign, led by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference run by Martin Luther King. It was a protest where they protested on local businesses to get them to desegregate. They simply just stopped visiting the businesses. They eventually ended Jim Crow laws and businesses and restaurants were now open to African-Americans.
