It flows by the state of Ohio until draining in Lake Erie, in the city of Cleveland. Pollution of the Cuyahoga River Caused Water Fires. The most costly fire took place in 1952, with a damage of over one million US dollars.
On September 11, 1997, President Bill Clinton designated this river as one of the fourteen that make up the American Heritage Rivers system.
