In some cases, these teeth come in without problems, but they often have to be removed due to misalignment in the jaw, as shown below. The type of anatomic structure is vestigial. It is a form of an anatomical structure that no longer serves any function. As time passes, it is no longer needed in the body. Besides the wisdom tooth, another example would be a tailbone which has no use for humans.
