  The Nat Turner revolt was a slave rebellion that took place in Virginia in August 1831. The rebellion was put down within a few days but during those days the slaves killed between 55 to 65 people mostly whites.

  Aftermath there was widespread fear, white militias were organized in vengeance against slaves. Southern states legislatures passed new laws prohibiting education of slaves and black free people, forbid rights of assembly of free black people among other restrictions to civil rights. Besides that many slaves were accused of rebellion and executed or punished.
