The SEPOY REBELLION was an uprising against the East India Company. It took place between the years 1857 and 1858. After this rebellion, the BRITISH RAJ ruled in India.

The rebellion of India in 1857 began as a riot of sepoys, the Indian soldiers of the army of the British East India Company, on May 10, 1857, in the quartering of the town of Meerut. Soon there was an escalation of the conflict with the outbreak of other riots and civil strikes along the Gangetic plain and central India. The main clashes occurred in areas of the current Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northern Madhya Pradesh and the Delhi region. This rebellion posed a considerable threat to the power of the British Company throughout the region and was not suppressed until the fall of the kingdom of Gwalior on June 20, 1858. The Sepoy Rebellion is also known by some Indian historians as the First War of Independence of India.

This Sepoy Rebellion led to the dissolution of the British East India Company in 1858 and forced the British to reorganize their army, financial system and Indian administration. The country then went on to be directly governed by the British Crown with the name of British Raj.
