Krakatau volcano ( Indonesia ) is well known for its catastrophic 1883 eruption. The result of this eruption was 36,000 deaths. This eruption has been assigned a VEI ( Volcanic Explosivity Index ) of 6 ( or colossal ). VEI is a 0 to 8 index of increasing explosivity. VEI of 6 means : a plume height over 25 km and a displacement volume : 10 to 100,000 km³. The total energy released during the eruption was equivalent to 200 megatons of TNT.
