The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was an attempt by The U.S Federal Government to maintain balance between states that allowed slavery and those that did not. Missouri was allowed to become a part of the Union as a state that allowed slavery while Maine changed its status to being a non-slave state. This Allowed the country to keep an equal number of slave having and not slave having states.
The purpose of the Missouri Compromise was to
A) Keep the balance of free and slave states within the United States.
B) Establish a precedent as to whether or not slavery will exist in new territories gained by the US.
The Missouri Compromise (1820) temporarily solved the issue of the existence of slavery in the western territories gained during the early to mid 19th century. This law stated that all territories north of the 36'30 line would be considered free territories while any territory below the 36'30 line would be considered territories where slavery was allowed. Along with this, the Missouri Compromise allowed Missouri to join the Union as a slave state and allowed Maine to enter the US as a free state.
