Pahom, the protagonist of the story, is a greedy man who never seems to be satisfied with what he has. When given a chance to grab as much land as he wants by the Bashkirs, his greed took  toll on him. In the end, he ended up dead even though he had managed to be back to his starting point before the sunset. His greed had killed him.
