In human beings the source of nitrogenous waste is mainly proteins and nucleic acids.
Proteins are degraded into amino acids. These amino acids upon deamination produce ammonia and carbon skeleton. The carbon skeleton enters into gluconeogenesis pathway producing glycogen stores where as ammonia enter the urea cycle forming urea to be excreted in the urine.
Urea is also obtained from catabolism of pyrimidines (nitrogenous bases- cytosine and thymine). Small amounts of uric acid is also present in the urine and is obtained from the catabolism of purines. Purines i.e. Adenine and guanine in the presence of enzymes changes into hypoxanthine and xanthine which in the presence of oxidase enzyme forms uric acid.
