Here's a hint my teacher gave me for a problem like this:
Try to look at the "shape" as two different shapes; a triangle and a rectangle.
Dividing it up, we can see the rectangle would be 4in tall and 6in across. Use the appropriate formula to calculate the rectangles area.
Now the triangle, as we can see from the rectangles length is 6in across. And bc the rectangle is 4in tall, and on top of each other they total to 10in, we know the triangle is 6in tall. Once again, use the appropriate formula to so,be for the triangles area, then once you get that, add it to the area of the rectangle and BOOM! Finished :)
