It was Iran. Known as the Iranian Hostage Crisis.

Answer:

Iran

Explanation:

As Jimmy Carter was to end, a Iran hostage crisis schocked the world, were 66 Americans were held hostages for 444 days.

This was supported by extremists who demanded the extradition of the former ruler of Iran, (the Shah) to be sent from the US back to Iran to face judgment by the revolutionary government. The taking of the hostages created tensions between US and Iran eventually leading to the end of relationships and a potential war between them.

Important to keep in mind is that Iran used to be a key ally in the Middle East with the regime of the Shah.

The Shah never did actually faced the justice in his country and he eventually went to Egypt and other countries for receiving medical treatment for his cancer.

The crisis ended as Reagan came to the presidency,  in January 20, 1981.
