After Hester appears I front of the crowd, the entire crowd became silent, and start muttering words to each other, at a volume that they do not want Hester to hear. The knight (or whomever it is that led Mistress Hester to the market place) tells the crowd "Make way, good people, make way, in the King's name, ..." and the entire crowd splits I half to create a pathway for Hester to walk through. Although no one wants her to hear what they have been saying, everyone is ah of bravery shown by her...
