Prophecy collection from the 16th and 17th centuries, written in English and Latin and sometimes by Elias . Elias was born in 1617 and received his education there. Although he started out as a solicitor, he joined the Crown's service as a commissioner of excise in 1644. His marriage to Lady Mainwaring in 1647 gave him the freedom to exercise his interests in astronomy and alchemy. He had a large network of acquaintances as a result of these and other pursuits, and some of them left him priceless manuscript collections (see Scope and Content). After the Restoration, joined the Office of Arms as Windsor Herald; but, about 1672, he withdrew and received a pension, which he was able to enjoy until his death in 1692.
