The sensory modalities mediated by inner ear structures are: hearing and balancing.

Inner ear is composed of three parts: cochlea, semicircular canals (also called labyrinth) and the vestibule. The cochlea is involved with the hearing sensory. Whereas the labyrinth and vestibule provide balance to the body. The vestibule has further 2 parts: utricle and saccule.

Balancing of the body is the act of maintaining the mass of the body at the center of its support system. Balance is sometimes referred to as the sixth sense of the body and prevents it from falling down. The sense of balance is known by the name equilibrioception.
