The author used this allusion to show the violence with which the boy attacked his captors. This conveys the connotation that the boy was helpless and that his captors were stronger than he was.
What is an allusion?
- It's a figure of speech.
- It is a way of establishing the figurative language in the story.
- It is an attempt to reference another work.
The allusion is very important to reinforce the meaning of some elements of the text, allowing the reader to have a greater understanding and to have a more efficient reading.
In the text shown above, the author alludes to the biblical story of David and Goliath. In this story, David was much more fragile than Goliath and that made people disbelieve that he could attack and defeat Goliath.
However, David attacked Goliath with a rock and it is believed that in this process he emitted a very loud scream that represented his strength and determination.
This easiness of David is similar to the fragility of the kidnapped boy compared to the raptors that were bigger, faster, and stronger than him. Therefore, when the boy screams as he attacks the raptors, the author wants the reader to think that the boy had the same determination and strength as David.
This deepens the reader's understanding and makes him or her better visualize the story.
