I contend that what I refer to as Middle America's "creation" played a role in this political change. Conservatives were effective in exploiting what became known as the Social Issue and portraying "Liberalism" as effeminate, impractical, and elitist. This was done against the backdrop of the 1960s social upheaval and the emergence of conservative populism and Middle America.
