Considered one of the earliest American feminists, Anne Hutchinson was a spiritual leader in colonial Massachusetts who challenged male authority and implicitly accepted gender roles, preaching to both women and men and  questioning Puritan salvation teaching.

The parish church had no formal power in  government. Ministers were not allowed to hold any government office. Anne Hutchinson was banished from the colony for refusing to repent of her crimes. The main difference between the Pilgrims and the Puritans is that the Puritans did not see themselves as separatists. They called themselves "non-separatist parishioners", meaning that they did not challenge the Church of England as a false church.
