A style of jazz originating in the 1950s that focused on African American styles of popular music such as the blues, gospel, and r&b is known as Hard Bop.
From around 1955 through 1965, Hard Bop dominated the jazz genre. The 1950s saw the emergence of hard bop, led by artists like Horace Silver, Clifford Brown, Art Blakey, Jackie McLean, and Sonny Rollins, who collectively created some remarkable records that are still highly influential today.
Up until the late 1960s, when soul-jazz, avant-garde, and fusion took its place, Hard Bop was among the most widely adopted jazz genres. Even so, Wynton Marsalis and Terence Blanchard, both former members of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, as well as other new musicians, have straight-ahead tones that show its influence.
