The U.S.S. Maine battleship was sunk in the Havana, Cuba harbor on February 15, 1898, by an explosion of unknown origin which ultimately resulted in a naval blockade of Cuba and a declaration of war.
Maine had been deployed to Cuba, ostensibly on a courtesy visit, to defend American interests thereafter protests broke out in Havana in January. One of the first American battleships, built for more than two million dollars was blown up by a mine, which also claimed 266 of the crew's 354 lives according to an official U.S. Naval Court of Inquiry report on March 28.
However, public opinion in the United States still placed the responsibility on the Spanish military holding Cuba. The situation was not resolved through subsequent diplomatic exchanges, and by the end of April, the Spanish-American War had begun.
