The best way to sum up social identity theory is to say that it anticipates specific intergroup behaviors based on assumptions about the perceived status, legitimacy, and permeability of the intergroup environment. In contrast, social identity theory is sometimes used to refer broadly to theories about human social selves.
Furthermore, social identification theory was never meant to be a comprehensive theory of social categorization, despite the fact that some academics have viewed it as such. Self-categorization theory, which expanded on the findings of social identity theory to give a more broad account of self and group processes, was created by John Turner and colleagues as a result of their understanding of the social identity theory's constrained application.
