let x be the number of hours  she worked walking the dog

let y be the number of hours she  worked as a lifeguard

13y+10x=177 -------- (1)

worked 3 more hour lifeguarding than an hour walking dog

y = 3 + x --------(2)

substitute equation 2 in 1

13(3+x) +10x =177

39+13x+10x = 177

39 + 23x = 177

23x = 177 -39

23x = 138

x = 138/23

x = 6

now substitute x=6 in equation 2

y = 3 + 6

y = 9
