Ellis Island was used in the processing of immigrants entering the United States from 1892 until it closed in 1954.

The colonial period, the early 19th century, and the years between 1880 and 1920 saw significant volumes of immigration to the United States. While most immigrants arrived in America in pursuit of better economic opportunities, others came for religious freedom.

Between 1892 and 1954, when it was closed, Ellis Island served as the initial and biggest federal immigration processing facility, welcoming almost 12 million people who would become Americans. The majority of immigrants reaching Ellis Island were mostly from eastern and southern Europe. Most of them arrived out of a strong desire to flee economic poverty in their native countries.
