According to the French social scientist Émile Durkheim, mechanical and organic solidarity refers to the social cohesiveness of tiny, homogeneous societies (mechanical) and societies that are distinguished by a reasonably sophisticated division of labour (organic). The social integration of people who share the same values and views within a community is known as mechanical solidarity.
These shared ideals and ideas form a "collective conscience" that influences each member's internal motivation to cooperate. Durkheim adopted the language of physical science when he coined the term mechanical solidarity because, in his opinion, the forces motivating society's members to cooperate were very similar to the internal energy causing the molecules in a solid to come together.
