For many years, businesses pushed the start of Black Friday sales earlier and earlier until they finally opened on Thanksgiving night.
Kmart opened its doors at 7 PM on Thanksgiving Day 2009 so that customers may avoid the traffic on Black Friday and make it home in time for dinner with their families. Two years later, on what became mockingly known as "Black Thursday," several stores started opening at 8 or 9 PM. Other retailers have continued this practice in succeeding years, either opening Thanksgiving Day earlier and earlier or staying open all day, starting early in the morning. Instead, the terms "Gray Thursday" or "Brown Thursday" have been adopted in some retail and media sources.
